These Hot Tips Can Keep You Warm
|
|
Cool temperatures mean full-time duty for furnaces. To make sure yours is ready to keep you warm in the months ahead, consider these simple precautions: |
-
Replace your furnace's filters at the start of the heating season, then check them monthly. When a filter becomes dirty, replace it to keep your system from overworking and wasting energy.
- Use your household vacuum to remove dirt or dust from the blower compartment. A dirty blower can also affect performance and efficiency.
- Areas around the furnace should be free from clutter. Using these areas for storage can be a fire hazard. They may also obstruct combustion air supply, which could cause the production of carbon monoxide gas.
- Check chimney and flue pipe connections, and make sure they are free from blockages. Also, make sure they're not loose.
- Set the thermostat well above room temperature, and when the furnace switches on, listen for unusual sounds. Poorly performing burners can produce unfamiliar noises, which may require professional attention.
